Lufthansa Announces Cancellation of 20,000 Flights Until October Due to Soaring Fuel Prices

Lufthansa Group announced it will cancel over 20,000 flights across its affiliated airlines until October to tackle the problem of soaring jet fuel prices caused by the war in the Middle East.

Foreign news agencies reported that Germany's Lufthansa Group declared it would cancel over 20,000 short-haul flights of its affiliated airlines through October to handle the rising cost of aviation fuel and the potential for fuel shortages in Europe resulting from the impact of the war with Iran.

Lufthansa stated on Tuesday, 21 Apr 2026 GMT+7, that it began canceling 120 daily flights starting Monday, with these cancellations set to continue through the end of May.

The Lufthansa Group, which includes several airlines such as Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, and others, said these flight cancellations will save approximately 40,000 metric tons of fuel.

Lufthansa's move comes as airlines worldwide reduce flight schedules on previously profitable routes that have become unprofitable due to jet fuel prices nearly doubling since the outbreak of the Middle East war on 28 Feb GMT+7.

Additionally, Europe, which imports about 70% of its aviation fuel consumption, may face fuel shortages and could implement fuel rationing as early as next week, since before the war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, most of Europe’s fuel imports came from the Middle East region.
