Emmanuel Macron revealed that another French soldier has died following an attack by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon last week, which had already resulted in the death of one French soldier.
On 22 Apr 2026 GMT+7, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that a French soldier serving as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has died, marking the second fatality from wounds sustained in an attack by Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon last week.
Armed militants attacked a patrol unit conducting bomb disposal operations on a road in the village of Ghanduriyah in southern Lebanon on 18 Apr, killing one French soldier and injuring three others, two of whom were in critical condition.
Macron said on Wednesday that Sergeant Anisette Girardin, one of the wounded soldiers, was evacuated to France for treatment on Tuesday (21 Apr) but died on Wednesday due to the severity of his injuries.
“He died for France,” Macron stated, adding that the nation “salutes the exemplary commitment of our troops within UNIFIL, who serve with courage and determination in the service of France and peace in Lebanon.”
Hezbollah denied the accusations in a statement urging caution against hasty conclusions of blame or responsibility until the Lebanese army’s investigation into the incident is complete to uncover all causes and circumstances.
The attack occurred amid a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump last Thursday (16 Apr), following the first direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in decades held in Washington, D.C.
