The U.S. Senate has voted down a measure to limit Donald Trump's war powers for the fifth time this year. The Middle East conflict remains tense despite ceasefire measures.
On 22 Apr 2026 GMT+7, the U.S. Senate voted 46 to 51 to reject a measure aimed at restricting President Donald Trump's war powers for the fifth time this year. The measure required the government to obtain congressional approval before any future military action in Iran.
Senator John Fetterman from the Democratic Party voted with Republicans to reject the measure, while Senator Rand Paul from the Republican Party voted with Democrats to approve it.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of the Democratic Party announced last week that Democrats will push for weekly votes on such war powers limitation measures in the near future.
Some Republican senators, including Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, indicated they might support authorizing military force if the conflict persists beyond 60 days. Republican Senate leaders have not ruled out such action if hostilities continue after 90 days.
However, when asked on Monday about a vote to authorize military force, Senate Majority Leader John Thune of the Republican Party said, “I do not see that happening right now.”
