US Threatens to Expand Strait of Hormuz Blockade, Deploys Additional Aircraft Carrier, Warns of Striking Iranian Minesweeper Boats

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reiterated plans to expand maritime blockade measures by preparing to deploy a second aircraft carrier to the region to counter Iranian maritime threats, granting the military immediate authorization to destroy such vessels.

On 24 April 2026, international news agencies reported that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed the United States will expand blockade measures in the Strait of Hormuz by preparing to deploy a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf region.

Hegseth stated the US military is fully prepared to respond if Iran attempts to lay naval mines or threaten shipping lanes. He emphasized the Navy will enforce a strict blockade, noting that the US has been strengthening blockade operations daily from the Gulf of Oman to the open ocean, with the Navy acting without hesitation.

The defense secretary also said President Donald Trump authorized the Navy to immediately destroy Iranian fast boats if they attempt to lay mines or disrupt navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He added that orders have been given to shoot and kill small Iranian vessels attempting to place mines in the area.
