6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Hokkaido in Northern Japan with 83 km Depth, No Tsunami Warning Issued

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Tokachi region in southern Hokkaido Prefecture, with a focal depth of 83 kilometers. Tremors were felt across many areas, and no tsunami warning was issued.


On 27 April 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in the Tokachi region of southern Hokkaido in the early Monday morning, recorded at 05:23 local time, with a focal depth of 83 kilometers.

The strongest shaking was measured in Urakawa and Niikappu towns. Many areas in Hokkaido, including Sapporo, Hakodate, and Kushiro, felt tremors at intensity level 4. The shaking was also felt widely across the Tohoku and Kanto regions at levels ranging from 3 to 1. There was no tsunami warning issued, and initially, no severe damage has been reported.
