Reviewing Threats and Assassination Attempts on Trump from 2016 to 2026

A shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner has once again caused alarm amid security concerns, underscoring the repeated assassination risks targeting Trump over more than a decade.

Latest incident: Gunfire at major event leads to emergency evacuation of U.S. leader.

Gunshots rang out around 8:30 p.m. local time inside the Washington Hilton Hotel during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, where Trump was scheduled to deliver a speech.

The event was attended by many prominent figures, including the Vice President, Cabinet members, and Congress members, prompting the Secret Service to swiftly evacuate Trump from the area.

However, it has not been confirmed whether Trump was the direct target of the shooting, and this is not the first assassination attempt against Donald Trump in recent years.

Two major assassination attempts occurred in 2024 during the election campaign.

  • Pennsylvania: Shot near the ear.

The incident took place in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a 20-year-old man fired an AR-style rifle at the speaking stage.

A bullet grazed Trump's right ear, resulting in one fatality before the sniper unit fatally shot the assailant.

A U.S. Senate report cited lapses in planning, communication, and management by the Secret Service as key factors.

  • Florida: Gunman storms golf course.

Another incident occurred at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, where a man was found carrying a rifle.

Secret Service agents fired to stop him before he fled, was later arrested, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Additionally, Donald Trump has faced multiple death threats and assassination attempts, including:

• In 2016, a British man tried to grab a police officer's gun at a Las Vegas campaign event, admitting he intended to shoot Trump.

• In 2017, a man stole a forklift in North Dakota intending to ram the presidential motorcade.

• In 2020, a letter containing the deadly toxin ricin was sent to Trump.

• In 2024, U.S. authorities arrested a Pakistani man linked to a plot to assassinate Trump, connected to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Subsequently, another Iranian was charged after receiving orders to kill U.S. citizens, with Trump named among the targets.

• In 2026, the Secret Service stopped a 21-year-old man carrying a shotgun and gas canisters who tried to approach the Mar-a-Lago resort while Trump was not present.

Despite facing multiple assassination attempts and threats, Trump has affirmed he will not reduce his public role or cancel engagements out of fear.
