An attack occurred on a university and residential area in Kunar Province, resulting in 7 deaths and dozens more injured. Afghanistan has accused Pakistan of carrying out the attack.
On 27 Apr 2026 GMT+7, BBC News reported citing multiple sources that an attack in Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan caused at least 7 deaths and 75 injuries. Among the injured were students and professors from Kunar University.
The Afghan Taliban government stated that artillery and rockets were fired into Kunar Province, while other sources told BBC that jets and drones were also used in the attack.
The Taliban added that among the injured, 30 were university students, and they accused Pakistan of attacking the university and residential areas in Kunar Province.
However, Pakistan's Ministry of Information denied Afghanistan's accusations, labeling them as fake news.
This report of the Kunar attack comes just weeks after Pakistan conducted airstrikes on a drug rehabilitation center in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital. United Nations data later indicated that attack caused as many as 269 deaths.
Matiullah Shahab, an independent journalist and human rights activist in Asadabad city, said he was only one kilometer from the university attack site and heard explosions around 14:00 local time.
A statement from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education said various university buildings and surrounding areas were severely damaged.
In recent months, hundreds have been killed or injured in fighting along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
In the weeks prior, China acted as a mediator, leading to negotiations between the two sides in Urumqi, the capital of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
During the ceasefire, Taliban leaders decided not to publicly comment on Pakistan or previous airstrikes to avoid undermining the negotiation atmosphere.
However, this silence ended when Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesperson for the Taliban government, called the Kunar attack a “serious and unacceptable war crime, a clearly brutal and provocative act.”
Historically, Pakistan was a major supporter of the Taliban, but relations have deteriorated after Pakistan accused the Taliban of sheltering the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militant group, which attacks Pakistan’s government forces.
