On 28 April 2026, two trains collided head-on violently near Bekasi station on the outskirts of Jakarta late last night. The crash resulted in at least 7 deaths and 81 injuries. Rescue teams continue to assist passengers trapped inside the wreckage, with emergency crews using cutting equipment to free those caught inside the carriages due to the force of the impact.
Anna Purba, spokesperson for Indonesia's national railway company, revealed that at least two passengers remain trapped alive inside the train wreckage. Rescue teams are urgently working to reach them, and the death toll may rise as the rescue operation continues.
Meanwhile, Asep Edi Suheri, Jakarta Police Chief, stated that the train that caused the collision crashed into an all-female carriage of the commuter train. All the fatalities occurred in this carriage, while about 240 passengers on the other train managed to evacuate safely.
At the hospital, the atmosphere is chaotic as many relatives of the injured have arrived to await news. Medical staff are working quickly to triage patients according to the severity of their injuries.
Indonesia frequently faces transportation accidents partly due to aging infrastructure and insufficient maintenance. Previously, in 2024, a train collision in West Java caused numerous deaths and injuries.
