Japan Ends Large Earthquake Watch Advisory After Magnitude 7.7 Quake, Urges Public to Stay Prepared

Japan has ended its advisory for a large earthquake watch following a magnitude 7.7 quake and advises the public to remain consistently prepared for such situations.

On 28 April 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced the end of the "Mega Quake" watch advisory in the northeastern region of the country as of 5:00 p.m. local time on Monday. This warning had been issued after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of the Sanriku region on 20 April.

During the advisory period, 182 municipalities across Hokkaido, the Tohoku region, and Kanto were alerted to prepare disaster response measures.

Although the watch advisory has been lifted, experts told NHK that earthquake activity may still increase in the area and recommend that residents continue to stay prepared for possible events.
