Austria Begins Trial of Man Who Planned 2024 Attack on Taylor Swift Concert

An Austrian court has begun hearing the case of a 21-year-old man accused of pledging allegiance to the Islamic State and planning to detonate explosives and stab fans outside Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna in 2024. This plot led to the cancellation of all three shows, which were expected to draw more than 195,000 attendees.

The Austrian court is examining charges against the defendant, accused of allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) and planning sabotage of Taylor Swift’s "The Eras Tour" concerts in Vienna in August 2024. The attack caused the cancellation of all three shows, which were expected to attract over 195,000 concertgoers in total.

The main defendant, identified only as Beran A., a 21-year-old Austrian national, faces serious terrorism charges including membership in a terrorist organization, punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors state he intended to use homemade explosives and knives to attack crowds gathered outside Ernst Happel Stadium, where up to 30,000 fans gathered each night, with another 65,000 inside the venue.

Security officials revealed the defendant aimed to "kill as many people as possible." The plot was thwarted just one day before the first show after intelligence from U.S. authorities. On 7 August 2024, a search of his apartment uncovered numerous bomb-making materials.

Also on trial is another defendant, Arda K., accused of conspiring with Beran and a third man, Hasan E., to carry out coordinated attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates on behalf of the Islamic State during Ramadan 2024.

Reports state Hasan E. carried out a stabbing attack on security personnel at a mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in March 2024 and was arrested. Beran and Arda did not act on planned attacks in Turkey and the UAE, with Beran returning to Austria to plan the attack on "The Eras Tour" concert instead.

Although nearly two years have passed, the memory remains a deep wound for Taylor Swift fans. After the incident, Swift posted on Instagram that "canceling the Vienna shows was heartbreaking. The reason for the cancellation filled me with fear and guilt because I knew so many people had planned to come to see the shows."

Beran A.'s lawyer said he plans to plead guilty to most charges but did not specify which ones. The court in Wiener Neustadt will continue the trial until 12 May.

The case has been compared to the 2017 Manchester suicide bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in the United Kingdom, which killed 22 people. This tragic event influenced Austrian authorities' decision to cancel Taylor Swift’s concerts to ensure public safety.
