The death toll from the train collision near the outskirts of Jakarta, Indonesia, has risen to 15 as search operations concluded after more than 12 hours.
On 28 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto ordered an urgent investigation into the cause after a long-distance train crashed into a stationary local train near Jakarta late Monday night. The death toll has now reached at least 15, with dozens more injured.
Officials completed nearly 12 hours of rescue work at Bekasi Timur Station east of Jakarta, using cutting tools to dismantle the twisted wreckage of passenger carriages caused by the Monday night collision.
"This morning... everything is complete. I am confident no victims remain trapped beneath the train wreckage," said Mohammad Shafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), in a Tuesday statement.
Senior Cabinet Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono told reporters Tuesday afternoon that the death toll has risen to 15, with 88 people injured.
According to Franoto Wibowo, spokesperson for KAI, the state railway operator, it appears a taxi clipped a commuter train at a railway crossing, causing the train to stop on the tracks before being hit by another train.
The scene at the station after the accident was chaotic, with rescue workers shouting for oxygen tanks while ambulances lined up to take patients. The military, fire department, Basarnas, and Red Cross all mobilized to assist in the evacuation.
On Tuesday, President Prabowo Subianto visited patients at a hospital in Bekasi, expressing condolences to the victims' families and stating he had ordered an immediate investigation into the cause.
He also ordered the construction of an overpass at a crossing in Bekasi, noting, "Overall, many railway crossings still lack staff supervision... I have therefore instructed urgent improvements to these crossings, whether by establishing guard posts or building overpasses."
