French Teen Caught Licking Juice Machine Straw in Singapore Faces Up to 2 Years in Prison

A French teenager in Singapore sparked widespread social media criticism after filming himself licking a straw in a juice vending machine and then putting it back. The footage became legal evidence, putting him at risk of up to two years in prison.

The incident took place in Singapore on 12 March at a shopping mall, where Didier Gaspar Owen Maximilien, 18, was accused of licking a straw from a juice vending machine before returning it to its slot.

Singapore police filed two charges: causing public nuisance, punishable by up to 3 months in jail or a fine of up to 2,000 Singapore dollars; and causing property damage, carrying a maximum penalty of 2 years imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Reports state the suspect filmed himself during the act and posted the video on social media, which went viral and prompted an investigation by authorities.

IJOOZ, the juice vending machine operator, revealed it had to replace all 500 straws in the affected machine to ensure hygiene safety.

It was reported that the suspect is a student at ESSEC Business School, which confirmed his student status and said it has been cooperating with his family. However, no further details were given as the case is ongoing. The court has granted bail of 5,000 Singapore dollars, with a hearing scheduled for 22 May.
