Trump Affirms He Will Not Lift Blockade Until Iran Agrees to Nuclear Talks

Donald Trump affirmed that he will not lift the blockade of Iranian ports until Iran agrees to negotiate on their nuclear program.

On 29 Apr 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump said he rejected Iran's proposal for the U.S. to lift the blockade and reopen the Strait of Hormuz first, then negotiate on the nuclear program later. This comes amid ongoing tensions between the two sides, with the timing of any new talks still uncertain.

Trump told the news site Axios in a phone interview that he wants a commitment to limit Iran's nuclear program first; otherwise, he will not lift the blockade of Iranian ports. He emphasized that Iran "must not have nuclear weapons under any circumstances."

Trump added, "The blockade is more effective than bombing. Right now, they are choking like a stuffed pig, and the situation will get worse for them because they will not have nuclear weapons."

Although Trump praised the effectiveness of the blockade, he declined to discuss military plans during the interview, stating only, "They want peace. They don't want me to continue the blockade, but I still don't want to lift it because I don't want them to have nuclear weapons."
