Trump and Putin Talk for 1.5 Hours Discussing Iran Ceasefire

Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin by phone, discussing several issues including the war with Iran, during which Putin proposed assisting in managing Iran’s enriched uranium.

On 29 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Yuri Ushakov, spokesperson for the Kremlin government of Russia, revealed that President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Donald Trump of the United States had a telephone conversation lasting over one and a half hours today, focusing mainly on the ceasefire situation with Iran and other key topics.

According to Ushakov, Russia initiated this conversation, with Putin expressing that Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran was “correct” because it opens opportunities for negotiations and helps stabilize the overall situation.

The Russian leader also emphasized the “extremely serious and unavoidable consequences” that would not only affect Iran and neighboring countries but the entire global community if the U.S. and Israel decided to resume military action.

Beyond Iran, the two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine, with Putin raising the possibility of declaring a ceasefire to coincide with Victory Day on 9 May, which Russia commemorates as the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that Putin offered to assist with matters related to the Iran war, particularly in managing enriched uranium.

“He (Putin) wants to help. He told me he wants to be involved with managing the enriched uranium. He can help us handle this,” Trump revealed, adding, “Before you help me, I want your (Ukraine) war to end first.”

Russia had previously proposed overseeing Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, similar to the role it played in the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Trump said the conversation with Putin went “very well” and expressed confidence that a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine would come fairly soon. “I have known him (Putin) for a long time. I think he has been ready to make a deal for a while, but I believe some people have made it difficult for him to do so.”

While Trump did not explicitly deny the possibility of Iran’s enriched uranium being sent to Russia, he signaled that the most important priority now is ending the war in Ukraine first.
