Iranian Leader Claims U.S. Defeat in War, Condemns Hormuz Strait Blockade

Iran's Supreme Leader claimed that the United States has suffered a major defeat in the war, while Iran's president warned that the U.S. naval blockade measures will end in failure.

On 30 Apr 2026 GMT+7, Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, announced that the United States has suffered a humiliating defeat and rejected the threats from President Donald Trump, who said that the U.S.-imposed naval blockade as an economic sanction against Iran might continue for several more months.

"Today, two months after the world's aggressors deployed troops and launched the largest invasion in the region, and following the humiliating defeat of the U.S. in their various plans, a new historic chapter in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz is about to begin," Mojtaba Khamenei said in a statement broadcast on national television.

Mojtaba Khamenei further stated that Iran now holds the advantage in this crisis, praising the Iranian military for successfully controlling the shipping routes in the strategic strait.

Mojtaba Khamenei was injured in the initial attacks by the United States and Israel, which resulted in the death of his father, Ali Khamenei. He has not appeared publicly since being appointed Supreme Leader on 9 Mar 2026 GMT+7.

The United States began blockading Iranian ports two weeks ago, while the Islamic Republic has maintained firm control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz since the conflict erupted on 28 Feb 2026 GMT+7.

"Any attempts at a naval blockade or other restrictions violate international law... and are doomed to fail," Iranian President Masoud Pesechkian warned, adding that the U.S. blockade is an indefinite disruption to stability in the Persian Gulf.
