Iran Executes 21 Dissidents, Arrests 4,000 Since War Began

The United Nations revealed that Iran has executed 21 dissidents and arrested another 4,000 people since the war began, while Iranian authorities claim legitimacy for these executions.

Foreign news agencies reported that on 29 Apr 2026 GMT+7, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) disclosed that Iranian authorities have executed at least 21 dissidents and detained more than 4,000 since the United States and Israel began bombing the country over two months ago.

Volker Türk, the UN's Human Rights Chief, condemned these measures as a "violent and brutal" denial of the rights of the Iranian people.

In response to these criticisms, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, head of Iran's judiciary and a hardliner playing a key role in suppressing dissent, claimed that the widespread executions reflect the "legitimate demands of the people."

"Iran's judiciary will neither be negligent nor lenient in investigating and legally punishing any criminals stained with the blood of our people," Ejei said. "We disregard the rhetoric of arrogant powers and their propaganda media."

The surge in executions occurred just months after violent crackdowns on protests earlier this year, during which Iranian security forces killed thousands of anti-government demonstrators.

Last Thursday, Mizan News Agency, affiliated with Iran's judiciary, reported another execution of a person involved in those protests, while the human rights activist news agency HRANA, based in the United States, identified the deceased as 21-year-old karate athlete Sasan Asadvar Jonagani.
