Trump Considers Reducing U.S. Troops in Spain and Italy

Donald Trump revealed he is considering reducing the number of troops in Spain and Italy after conflicts regarding the Iran war. Earlier, Trump also mentioned plans to cut troop numbers in Germany for the same reasons.

On 30 Apr 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump said he is considering reducing the number of American troops stationed in Spain and Italy as the U.S. reevaluates its military posture in Europe amid disputes with allied groups over the Iran war.

“I mean, they’re not cooperating as they should,” Trump responded when asked about the possibility of cutting troops in Italy and Spain. The previous night, Trump similarly stated he is considering the possibility of reducing troops in Germany as well.

“Yes, probably so,” Trump added. “Why wouldn’t I? Italy hasn’t helped at all. As for Spain, it’s terrible. Really terrible.” Notably, the Spanish leader has refused to assist the U.S. in the war against Iran and has consistently opposed it.

Trump has had intense conflicts with European allied leaders over their lack of support in the Iran war. In the Oval Office today, he also criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz once again.

“You’d think they’d say, ‘We’re more than happy to help you,’” Trump said. “I mean, he (Merz) has performed very poorly.”

Earlier this week, Merz stated that the U.S. is being embarrassed by Iran. However, he also noted that his relationship with Trump remains “good.”
