Pavel Talankin, the Oscar-winning documentary director, faced an unexpected incident after New York airport officials prohibited him from bringing his trophy onto the plane, forcing him to check it in. However, the trophy vanished after reaching its destination.
A confusing incident occurred involving Pavel Talankin, a Russian documentary director and Academy Award winner for his film Mr Nobody Against Putin. He had placed the trophy in his carry-on bag while preparing to travel from New York City to Germany last Wednesday. However, security officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport banned the trophy from the cabin, citing that it could be used as a weapon. Consequently, he had to check the item in the aircraft’s hold. Upon landing in Germany, his destination, the Oscar trophy was found missing without a trace.
Lufthansa, the airline that assisted in packing the trophy into a box for Talankin, stated in a press release that they are conducting a thorough investigation. They expressed deep regret and are urgently searching to recover the trophy and return it as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the U.S. airport security agency, has not provided further details regarding the incident.
Robin Hessman, the executive producer of the documentary, revealed that she helped coordinate with officials by phone since Talankin is not fluent in English. She also noted that such an incident likely would not happen to Leonardo DiCaprio.
Talankin often travels with his Oscar and BAFTA Awards, which he received in the same year, to exhibit them at various events. Prior to this, he had never encountered problems bringing them on planes.
The Oscar trophy is approximately 34 centimeters tall, weighs about 3.9 kilograms, and costs between 400 to 1,000 U.S. dollars to produce.
The documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin documents war propaganda in Russian schools following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Currently, Talankin has fled Russia for safety and is living in Europe.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities have banned the documentary from several streaming platforms, citing that it promotes extremist ideologies and terrorism.
