Legal Team to Meet Aung San Suu Kyi This Weekend After Myanmar Moves Her to House Detention

A legal team is preparing to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar's former leader, this Sunday to discuss legal strategies after confirmation that she was moved from prison to house detention in Naypyidaw and granted an additional sentence reduction.

A representative of Aung San Suu Kyi's legal team revealed plans to meet the 80-year-old former State Counsellor over the weekend, following the Myanmar military government's decision to transfer her from prison to house detention on the night of Thursday, 30 Apr 2024 GMT+7.

This significant development came after Myanmar's military government media released photographs of Suu Kyi sitting on a wooden bench flanked by two uniformed officers. These are the first publicly released images of her in several years since the February 2021 coup d'état.

The legal team representative confirmed to Reuters that "Aung San Suu Kyi is currently still in Naypyidaw" and stated that the meeting on Sunday, 3 May 2024 GMT+7, will not be a routine prisoner visit but a discussion about her legal status and the delivery of essential personal items.

Prior to announcing her transfer to house detention, the Myanmar military government announced a further reduction of Suu Kyi's sentence by one-sixth of the remaining term as part of a broader amnesty for many prisoners nationwide.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison on multiple charges including corruption and violating state secrets, which her allies say are politically motivated. Previously, her sentence was reduced to 27 years, with additional reductions during the recent Myanmar New Year (Thingyan) period, and now a further one-sixth reduction before her move to house detention.

Analysts view this move by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, leader of Myanmar's military government, as a response to ongoing international pressure, especially from ASEAN, which has called for the release of political prisoners. This aligns with Myanmar's efforts to rejoin ASEAN's senior officials' meetings after being suspended since the coup.

Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of General Aung San, Myanmar's independence hero, was previously held under house arrest at a lakeside residence in Yangon for over 15 years under prior military governments before leading the National League for Democracy (NLD) to electoral victory and becoming civilian leader. She was ousted again in 2021, triggering a protracted civil conflict that continues to this day.
