Iranian Media Reports Parliament Plans Law to Restrict Traffic Through Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian parliament is preparing to pass a law restricting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, completely banning Israeli ships from passage, while "enemy" vessels must pay war reparations beforehand.

Iran's government-run Press TV reported on Saturday, 2 May 2026 GMT+7, that the Iranian parliament is ready to approve legislation specifying which types of vessels are permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz amid stalled negotiations with the United States.

Press TV cited Ali Nikzad, the parliament's deputy speaker, saying that under the proposed 12-point plan, Israeli ships will be strictly prohibited from passing through the strait, while ships from "enemy countries," believed to be the U.S., will have to pay war reparations to obtain a permit before crossing this waterway.

The report also stated that all other vessels will need to seek permission from Iran to transit the strait.

This measure comes at a time when negotiations between Iran and the U.S. are at a standstill, with both sides refusing to concede on their demands.

On Friday, Iran submitted a revised peace proposal to the negotiating team after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected the earlier offer. However, Trump later stated that he was still unsatisfied with the latest proposal.

Meanwhile, Iran’s National Radio IRIB reported that on Saturday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Qasem Garibabadi said, “The ball is now in America’s court to choose between the path of diplomacy or confrontation.”
