Donald Trump announced the launch of Project Freedom to safely escort various cargo ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, pointing out that these ships have been affected by the war despite having done nothing wrong.
On 3 May 2026, Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced via a post on Truth Social that the U.S. would begin an operation to escort cargo ships out of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday (4 May) under a mission called “Project Freedom,” citing requests from various countries asking the U.S. to assist their ships.
“Countries from all over the world, nearly all of which are not involved in the ongoing and clearly intense Middle Eastern disputes, have asked the United States to help free their ships that are trapped in the Strait of Hormuz over issues in which they have no involvement whatsoever. They are simply neutral bystanders and innocent!” Trump’s post stated.
“For the benefit of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have informed these countries that we will safely navigate their ships out of these restricted waters so they can continue their business freely and smoothly. I emphasize that these are ships from various parts of the world that have no connection to what is currently happening in the Middle East.”
“I have instructed my representatives to inform them that we will exert full efforts to safely bring their ships and crews out of the Strait. In every case, they have stated they will not return until this area is safe for navigation and other activities.”
“This process, called ‘Project Freedom,’ will begin Monday morning according to Middle Eastern time.”
“I am aware that my representatives are having very positive discussions with Iran, and these talks could lead to very positive outcomes for everyone. This movement of ships is solely intended to free people, companies, and countries that have done nothing wrong—they are victims of the situation. This is a humanitarian act on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern countries, and especially Iran.”
“Many of these ships are beginning to run low on food and other necessities for the many crew members to maintain good health on board.”
“I believe this will demonstrate good will on behalf of everyone who has fought hard over the past months. If there is any obstruction of this humanitarian process in any way, such interference will be dealt with severely, regrettably. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Donald J. Trump, President of the United States.”
