Japanese Prime Minister Warns of Severe Oil Crisis Impact on Asia-Pacific Region

The Japanese leader points out that the energy crisis stemming from the Middle East is delivering a heavy impact on the Asia-Pacific region, accelerating efforts to partner with Australia to ensure energy security.

On 4 May 2026 GMT+7, Sanae Takaichi, the Japanese Prime Minister, during her visit to Canberra, Australia, stated that the global oil supply shortage crisis is having a massive impact on the Asia-Pacific region following restrictions on vital energy transport routes such as the Strait of Hormuz due to rising tensions.

The Japanese leader said after talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that Japan and Australia will expedite cooperation to manage the situation and maintain energy stability. She added that the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz severely affects the Indo-Pacific region, and Japan and Australia will coordinate closely to respond swiftly.

Moreover, the two countries plan to strengthen energy resilience and enhance supply chain flexibility. Australia is a major exporter of liquefied natural gas to Japan, while Japan supplies some diesel fuel to Australia. Both parties also agreed to expand cooperation in economic, security, and critical minerals sectors, including rare earth elements used in chip manufacturing, electric vehicle batteries, and weaponry.

Meanwhile, Albanese said this collaboration will help Australia reduce its vulnerability to global shocks such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
