Iran has declared it is prepared to retaliate if the US military attempts to take control of the Strait of Hormuz, following President Trump's plan to send troops to assist commercial vessels, increasing the risk of a fierce clash.
On 4 May 2026 GMT+7, tensions in the Middle East flared again after Iran issued a statement declaring it would use force to attack foreign forces, especially the US, if they moved within the Strait of Hormuz. This development followed US President Donald Trump's announcement that the US military would begin escorting vessels stuck in the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday morning local time.
An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated readiness to counter US threats, emphasizing that Iran is the protector and overseer of the Strait of Hormuz. They added that all commercial ships should coordinate with Iranian authorities for safety. The statement also said there is no reason for countries to comply with the illegal actions of the US and warned that military movements could further escalate the situation.
Earlier, the commander of Iran's Central Forces clearly declared that they would attack any foreign armed forces attempting to approach or enter the area, particularly targeting the US military.
