An explosion and fire occurred on a cargo ship linked to South Korea in the Strait of Hormuz. The cause of the explosion is still unknown as the U.S. begins escort operations for ships stranded in the Persian Gulf.
On 4 May 2026, a spokesperson for South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported an explosion and fire on a cargo ship connected to South Korea in the Strait of Hormuz. The exact cause of the explosion remains unconfirmed amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran in the area.
The cargo ship is registered under the Panama flag and has 24 crew members, including six South Koreans. The ship was docked near the Strait close to the United Arab Emirates when the explosion occurred. The ministry stated there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities.
South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the exact cause of the explosion and fire is still unknown, and the government is closely investigating the extent of the damage.
“The government will communicate closely with relevant countries on this matter and will take necessary measures to ensure the safety of our ship and crew within the Strait of Hormuz.”
This development comes just one day after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the start of “Project Freedom,” deploying military vessels into the Persian Gulf to escort cargo ships stranded since the outbreak of the conflict with Iran. Iran has declared it will respond strongly.
Currently, 26 ships linked to South Korea remain stranded in the Strait since the Middle East conflict began.
