Two Dead, Several Injured as Car Rams Into Crowd in Leipzig

A car crashed into pedestrians in Leipzig, Germany, resulting in two deaths and several dozen injuries. Police have arrested the suspect and are investigating the motive.

On 4 May 2026, German local authorities reported that a car drove into a crowd in Leipzig, in eastern Germany, on Monday afternoon, causing two deaths and multiple injuries.

Burkhard Jung, the mayor of Leipzig, stated that the suspect has been taken into custody, adding that authorities have not yet identified a clear motive for the attack.

Axel Schuh, head of Leipzig's fire department, revealed that 22 people were injured, two of whom were in serious condition. About 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics were working at the scene, supported by two rescue helicopters.

Police confirmed that the car struck several people on Grimmaische Straße, in the city center, before fleeing. The driver was later apprehended, and authorities said, “There is currently no further danger from this individual.”

At approximately 17:35, Leipzig radio reported that police declared the dangerous situation over and had cordoned off the area around the incident site.
