Britney Spears Pleads Guilty to Reckless Driving in DUI Case

Pop star Britney Spears has resolved her DUI case by pleading guilty to reckless driving as part of a deal with prosecutors, resulting in only one year of probation instead of three.

On 4 May 2026, Britney Spears, the famous pop star, ended her DUI case by pleading guilty on Monday to the lesser charge of "reckless driving," which reduced the probation period she might face if convicted on the original charge.

Her lawyer filed the plea on her behalf during a brief hearing at Ventura County Superior Court, north of Los Angeles. The 44-year-old singer did not need to appear in court since the charge was a misdemeanor and she was not present in the courtroom.

Britney Spears, who has often had personal troubles overshadowing her entertainment career, was initially charged solely with DUI after California Highway Patrol officers arrested her in March.

Police pursued Spears and her black BMW after reports of a driver speeding erratically in Ventura County. The highway patrol said she was detained after officers observed clear signs of intoxication.

Legal documents state the singer was driving under the influence of at least one combination of alcohol and drugs, though they did not specify which substances officers believed she had used.

According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, she was offered the chance to plead guilty to the lesser charge of reckless driving related to alcohol and drugs—a common resolution for first-time DUI offenders who caused no accidents and voluntarily agree to treatment.

The sentence for reckless driving is 12 months of non-reporting probation. Had she been convicted of the more serious DUI charge, she could have faced up to three years of probation.

District Attorney Eric Nazarenko told reporters after the hearing that if Spears reoffends during probation, she will face DUI charges again with harsher penalties, including up to one year in jail and five years of probation.

There are no driving restrictions on her license except a strict ban on driving with any amount of intoxicants in her system. She must also consent to breathalyzer tests and vehicle searches if requested for any reason.

Under the plea agreement, Commissioner Matthew Nemerson ordered Spears to complete 30 hours of alcohol education and attend weekly individual mental health treatment sessions, as well as seeing a psychiatrist twice monthly. She has voluntarily agreed to undergo this treatment.
