Fireworks Factory Explosion in China Kills 21, Injures 61 3 km Radius Evacuation Ordered

An explosion at a fireworks factory in Hunan Province killed 21 people and injured 61. Authorities mobilized nearly 500 rescue workers and evacuated residents within a 3-kilometer radius due to fears of a secondary explosion.

On 5 May 2026, China's CCTV reported a powerful explosion at the "Hua Sheng" fireworks factory in Liuyang city, Hunan Province, resulting in at least 21 deaths and 61 injuries. The blast occurred around 16:40 local time on Monday. The force of the explosion prompted officials to evacuate residents within 3 kilometers of the factory for safety.

Chinese authorities deployed nearly 500 rescue personnel to search for and assist those trapped inside the building, using robots to help find survivors amid the rubble. Reports stated that the factory site still contained two high-risk gunpowder warehouses, increasing danger during rescue operations. Officials implemented measures to increase humidity in the area to reduce the chance of further explosions. Police are investigating the cause and have detained those responsible at the company.

Meanwhile, President Xi Jinping ordered a full-scale search for missing persons and comprehensive aid for the injured. He also instructed an investigation into the cause and accountability for those involved.
