Iran Announces New Mechanism to Control Ships Passing Through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has announced a new mechanism to control ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States is trying to free vessels that have been stuck there for more than two months.

On 5 May 2026, Iran's government television station Press TV reported that Iran has implemented a new system to oversee maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, as the US begins a project to remove cargo ships stranded in the Persian Gulf since the start of the conflict.

The report stated that under the new system, every ship intending to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will receive an email from a contact linked to the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), informing them of the new regulations and rules for navigation.

Furthermore, every vessel is required to obtain a Transit Permit before crossing these waters, which constitute one of the world's most strategic points for oil transportation.

The report concluded by describing the plan as a "sovereign regulatory system," which is now already in effect in the Strait of Hormuz.

This latest development follows Donald Trump's announcement of “Project Freedom,” deploying military ships into the Persian Gulf to escort cargo ships that have been stranded since the conflict with Iran began, while Iran has declared it will respond forcefully.
