Russia and Ukraine Exchange Airstrikes Causing 23 Deaths Before Ceasefire

Russia and Ukraine continued to conduct air attacks against each other, resulting in more than 20 deaths on Tuesday before the scheduled short-term ceasefire between both sides.

On 5 May 2026, Russia launched a new wave of attacks across several areas in Ukraine, causing over 20 deaths, while Ukraine responded with drone strikes on Russia that injured dozens, all before Moscow and Kyiv's announced ceasefires took effect at different times.

Authorities in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region reported 12 deaths from Russian airstrikes, while President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as "brutal terrorist attacks," revealing an additional five deaths in Kramatorsk and four in Dnipro.

On the Russian side, the government of the Chuvash Republic reported two deaths and 32 injuries from Ukrainian drone attacks on Tuesday morning.

Last Monday, both Russia and Ukraine declared unilateral ceasefires ahead of the upcoming Victory Day commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany on Saturday. Russia stated it would cease fire on 8–9 May, while Ukraine declared a ceasefire starting 6 May and said it would respond to Russia equally afterward.

These unilateral ceasefire declarations appear to be independent actions, indicating that the two sides have not agreed on terms, duration, or joint monitoring.

Kyrylo Budanov, head of President Zelensky’s task force, said that if Russia accepts the ceasefire as announced by the Ukrainian president, "we will comply accordingly... the next steps depend on Russia."

Before the ceasefire deadline at local midnight Wednesday, Ukraine continued multiple airstrikes targeting industrial zones in Kirishi, Leningrad region, and a military parts factory in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic.

Zelensky stated that domestically produced "Flamingo" cruise missiles were used to strike the factory in Cheboksary, about 1,500 kilometers from the front lines. Later, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed it shot down six Flamingo missiles and 601 drones launched by Ukraine.
