Donald Trump announced the temporary suspension of Project Freedom, the naval escort operation through the Strait of Hormuz, citing significant progress in talks with Iranian representatives to reach an agreement.
On 5 May 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that the United States would temporarily suspend the naval escort operation through the Strait of Hormuz, known as “Project Freedom,” while maintaining the maritime blockade measures. He stated there has been significant progress toward a complete and final agreement with Iranian representatives.
Trump's statement said, “At the request of Pakistan and other countries, along with the great military successes we have achieved during operations against Iran, and the fact that we have made significant progress toward a complete and final agreement with Iranian representatives, we have agreed that while the blockade measures will remain fully enforced, ‘Project Freedom’ will be suspended for a short period to see if a conclusion and signing of an agreement can be reached.”
Earlier that same day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the “combat phase” of military operations against Iran, which began in February, has ended, and the United States is now focusing on a new operation to escort vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz instead.
