Iran Preempts with Talks with Chinese Minister on War and Strait of Hormuz Ahead of Trumps Visit

China welcomed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, who traveled to Beijing amid the Middle East crisis and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, ahead of Donald Trump's visit to China.

On 6 May 2026, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported that Wang Yi, China's Foreign Minister, met with Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, in Beijing, without disclosing further details. The report noted that Araghchi's visit to China is part of diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to the war. Previously, he had traveled to Russia, Oman, and Pakistan to seek international support.

Earlier, Iran's Fars News Agency reported that Araghchi was scheduled to discuss with Chinese counterparts bilateral relations as well as regional and international situations. This visit occurs less than 10 days before the expected visit of U.S. President Donald Trump to China, anticipated to begin on 14 May.

This development takes place amid tensions in the Middle East following conflicts between Iran and the U.S. and Israel that erupted in late February 2026. Both sides have held several discussions through foreign minister-level contacts. China has reiterated its stance calling for a ceasefire and supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty and security.
