Macron Urges All Parties to Lift Blockade to Restore Freedom of Navigation

French President Emmanuel Macron called on all parties to lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz to restore freedom of navigation, while inviting the international community to join a mission safeguarding cargo transport.

On 6 May 2026 GMT+7, French President Emmanuel Macron urged for navigation to resume in the Strait of Hormuz after a direct phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the previous Wednesday.

“All parties must lift the blockade of the strait immediately and unconditionally. We must return to full and sustainable freedom of navigation as it was before the conflict,” Macron stated in a declaration posted on X.

The French leader also encouraged other countries to consider joining a “multilateral mission” proposed by France and the United Kingdom, aimed at securing the transport of goods through the waterway.

“Recent events clearly demonstrate the benefits of such a mission. I have invited President of Iran to seize this opportunity, and I intend to discuss this further with President (Donald) Trump,” Macron said.

“A return to calm in the strait will help advance negotiations on nuclear issues, missile concerns, and the regional situation.”

However, it remains uncertain whether peace between Iran and the US will occur soon. According to an official Iranian media statement, during the phone call with Macron, President Pezeshkian mentioned Iran’s deep distrust toward the United States.
