The Israeli military revealed it killed a senior Hezbollah commander after attacking Beirut, Lebanon's capital, for the first time since a ceasefire agreement was reached between both sides.
On 7 May 2026, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced they had struck and killed Ahmed Ali Balout, commander of Hezbollah's “Redwan” Force, with a precise attack in a southern suburb of Beirut, Lebanon's capital.
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported on Wednesday that three missiles targeted an apartment in a southern suburban area of Beirut. This attack on Beirut marked the first since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon took effect in April.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening local time. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that Israel targeted the Redwan Force commander and had coordinated the strike in advance with the United States.
Netanyahu did not name the specific target but said the Redwan Force fighters under this commander were responsible for launching attacks on Israeli communities and soldiers.
Previously, Israel had not conducted any attacks in Beirut since the ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S. Instead, it focused its strikes on southern Lebanon, which the Israeli military claims is permitted under the ceasefire terms.
