Iranian media revealed that explosions were heard near Qeshm Island and a port city in the country, but the exact cause remains unclear. Some reports suggest it might have been an attack.
On 7 May 2026, several Iranian news outlets reported hearing explosions near Qeshm Island, Iran's largest island in the Strait of Hormuz, and at the port city of Bandar Abbas, Iran. The exact cause of the sounds remains uncertain.
Iran's Mehr news agency reported hearing explosions in Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island but added that "no official agency has yet commented on the cause of these sounds."
Meanwhile, the semi-official Tasnim news agency cited an anonymous source suggesting that the United Arab Emirates might be behind the attack on Qeshm Island. However, the agency noted this information has not been confirmed.
CNN contacted the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) for a statement but did not receive an immediate response.
At the same time, Nour News, linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that a passenger port on Qeshm Island was attacked. Additionally, Iran's Fars news agency reported that residents in Bandar Abbas heard explosion-like sounds from multiple areas across the city simultaneously.
