The US military confirmed it is conducting strikes on military targets in Iran, claiming self-defense after US warships in the Persian Gulf were attacked without prior provocation.
On 7 May 2026, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the US military is targeting Iranian military facilities used for launching missiles, drones, and small boats that attacked American warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, despite "no prior provocation."
"US forces intercepted an unprovoked attack by Iran and responded with self-defense strikes while US Navy guided-missile destroyers were transiting the Strait of Hormuz en route to the Gulf of Oman on 7 May," CENTCOM stated in a press release.
According to CENTCOM, the Iranian facilities targeted by US forces included missile and drone launch bases, command and control centers, as well as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance units.
"Iranian forces launched missiles, deployed drones, and used numerous small boats while the USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason were transiting international waters. No US assets were damaged in the attack," CENTCOM added in its statement.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that commercial facilities at Bahman Pier on Qeshm Island were targeted amid clashes between Iranian security forces and "enemy forces."
At the end of its statement, CENTCOM emphasized that the US does "not seek escalation" but remains "fully prepared to defend American forces."
