US authorities have found the body of a 33-year-old hiker, believed to have died from a bear attack inside Glacier National Park, after being reported missing since last Sunday.
Search and rescue teams discovered the body in a densely forested area while hiking in the renowned Montana national park. Officials noted that the wounds on the body are consistent with a bear attack.
The deceased has been identified as Anthony Pollio, 33, from Fort Lauderdale. Following the incident, park authorities immediately closed the hiking trail near the body’s location for visitor safety.
Glacier National Park is nicknamed "Bear Country" due to its large bear population, especially grizzly bears and the commonly found black bears in the area.
Wildlife experts say fatal bear attacks in the US are rare, but bears are increasingly approaching humans as their habitats or tourist campsites become easily accessible food sources.
According to National Park Service data, the most recent bear attack on a human in Glacier National Park occurred in August 2025, with the last fatality before this incident recorded in 1998 near Two Medicine Valley.
A study published in the Journal of Wildlife Management reports that between 1900 and 2009, there were only 63 deaths from black bear attacks in North America.
Meanwhile, another bear attack happened in Yellowstone National Park this past Monday, injuring two visitors. Yellowstone spans parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.
