The Greek military is swiftly investigating a mysterious unmanned drone boat after local fishermen found it hidden in a cave near an island in the Ionian Sea, with explosives discovered on the vessel.
Foreign news agencies reported on 9 May 2026 that fishermen discovered a drone boat inside a cave near Lefkada Island on Thursday (7 May). They alerted the coast guard, who later towed the boat to the nearby Vasiliki port.
Greek local media reported that the drone contained explosives and its engine was still running when found. There are also reports suggesting the boat may have been manufactured in Ukraine or has links to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Images circulated on social media show the Greek coast guard towing the multi-meter-long drone into port. The drone is dark-colored with an open top hatch, and no markings indicating its origin appear on the hull.
Currently, Greece's Ministry of Defense has taken over the investigation. Greek military experts will examine the drone’s purpose, determining whether it entered Greek waters due to technical failure or loss of contact with its control center.
One theory reported is that the drone might have been prepared to target Russia's "Shadow Fleet," a term for hundreds of tankers transporting Russian oil and gas to evade Western sanctions imposed after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The Greek newspaper Ta Nea noted the drone resembles Ukraine’s MAGURA V5 model, which has been used multiple times. However, this report has not been officially confirmed.
