Iranian authorities are urging citizens to reduce electricity and gas consumption after U.S. blockade measures have affected the country's import shipments.
On 9 May 2026, Iranian state media reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian called on Iranian citizens to lower their electricity and gas usage to avoid the government imposing mandatory restrictions.
"In the current situation, we must prevent pressure on the nation's energy grid through public participation and consumption management," Pezeshkian said.
Vice President Sagheb Esfahani suggested that society can help reduce fuel use with simple steps. "If each person reduces their gasoline consumption by 1 to 1.5 liters per day, that will be enough," Esfahani said, according to Iran's Mehr news agency.
Currently, Iran is facing severe economic pressure due to the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing international sanctions.
