U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Companies Aiding Irans Oil Sales to China Ahead of Trump-Xi Jinping Meeting

The U.S. has imposed a new round of sanctions on companies and individuals accused of aiding Iran in selling oil to China, as Donald Trump prepares to visit China this Wednesday.

On Monday, 11 May 2026 GMT+7, the U.S. government announced new sanctions against 12 companies and individuals, stating that these groups and persons facilitated the sale and transportation of oil from Iran to China.

This announcement came just days before President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing during his visit from 13 to 15 May GMT+7.

Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, described the latest move in a statement, affirming that the Treasury will "continue to cut off the Iranian regime from the financial networks used to support terrorism and destabilize the global economy."

The issue of China's support for Iran is also expected to be raised during the upcoming meeting in Beijing.

Last month, CNN reported, citing three sources familiar with recent intelligence assessments, that U.S. intelligence found indications China is preparing to deliver a new air defense system to Iran.

Earlier on Monday, Trump stated that the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran, which has lasted one month following clashes in the Strait of Hormuz, remains in effect, though the ceasefire is "on life support."
