Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is under intense pressure to resign. Recently, four junior ministers have announced their resignations, though some MPs continue to support him.
On 12 May 2026, four ministers in Sir Keir Starmer's government resigned within a short period, aiming to pressure him to step down amid heavy pressure from both the opposition and within his own party, which views Starmer as lacking leadership.
The first resignation of the day came from Mottata Fahnbulleh, Junior Minister for Communities and Housing, who wrote to the Prime Minister stating that the country is demanding change, but “the public does not believe you can deliver this change, and neither do I.”
Jess Phillips resigned from her position as Assistant Minister for Protection and Anti-Violence Against Women and Girls, telling Starmer that “actions speak louder than words.”
Following shortly after, Alex Davies-Jones resigned, calling on the Prime Minister to “act in the national interest and set a clear timeline for stepping down.”
The latest to resign was Zubair Ahmed, Junior Minister for Health Security and Innovation, stating it is clear that the public has “lost confidence in you as Prime Minister irretrievably.”
Sir Starmer is facing severe pressure to resign after his Labour Party suffered a crushing defeat in the latest local elections, losing votes to both left-wing and right-wing parties.
More than 70–80 Labour MPs have publicly called for him to resign officially or to set a clear timetable for leaving office, citing Starmer's lack of leadership, failure to resolve the sluggish economy, and increasing illegal immigration problems.
Additionally, a scandal regarding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the U.S., ignoring Mandelson's connections to the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, has further damaged Starmer's reputation significantly.
However, despite mounting pressure, Starmer has refused to resign, warning that a leadership contest now would bring “chaos” to the country. Meanwhile, over 100 Labour MPs have signed a letter supporting him to remain in office.
