Trump Criticizes Media Reporting Iran Still Doing Well, Calls It Virtual Treason

Donald Trump launched an attack on the media, saying that reports claiming the Iranian military is "still doing well" in its war against the United States amount to behavior akin to treason.

On 12 May 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, criticizing domestic media for reporting that Iran's military remains strong after its conflict with the United States, stating that such reporting constitutes treason.

"When fake news claims that the enemy, Iran, is doing well militarily against us, it is virtual treason because these statements are false and absurd. They are aiding and supporting the enemy! What they are doing only gives Iran false hope at a time when there should be none," he said.

"Only losers, traitors, and fools dare to fabricate stories attacking America!" Trump's message stated.

This is not the first time Trump has accused treason, although his previous comments were not specifically directed at journalists. Additionally, CNN reported that Trump pushed the Justice Department to issue subpoenas to journalists covering the war in Iran, demanding they reveal their sources.

Officials told CNN that the president conveyed this message on a note with the word "Treason" written in Sharpie marker, which he placed on a stack of printed articles and handed to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche during a White House meeting.
