Trump Asserts No Need to Rely on China to End Iran War Ahead of Beijing Visit

Donald Trump affirmed that it is unnecessary to involve China to help end the war with Iran, stressing that the United States will win by peaceful means or otherwise.

On 12 May 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump said he does not think it is necessary to seek China's help to end the war with Iran, even as hopes for a lasting peace agreement dim and Tehran has tightened control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Ahead of a major summit in Beijing, Trump stated he does not believe he needs to bring in Chinese President Xi Jinping to help resolve the conflict, which has disrupted traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a route that normally transports one-fifth of the world’s crude oil.

"I don’t think we need any help on Iran. We will win one way or another, whether peacefully or by other means," Trump told reporters.

It has been more than a month since a temporary ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran took effect, but both sides have made no progress toward a deal to end hostilities.

Meanwhile, sources close to the matter indicate that Iran appears to be strengthening control over the Strait of Hormuz, having made agreements with Iraq and Pakistan to transport oil and liquefied natural gas from the region. Other countries are also considering similar deals, suggesting Tehran’s control over this waterway may become normalized long-term.

On Tuesday, the Trump administration revealed that senior U.S. and Chinese officials agreed last month that no country should charge toll fees for traffic through the region, signaling consensus on this issue ahead of the summit.

China, which maintains relations with Iran and is a major buyer of Iranian oil, has not disputed this stance.

Trump is scheduled to discuss the war with Xi Jinping this week, with widespread expectations that he will urge China to persuade Tehran to reach an agreement with Washington to end the conflict.

Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran remain stalled, with the U.S. demanding Iran end its nuclear program and lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran demands U.S. compensation for war damages, an end to the maritime blockade, and cessation of all hostilities, including in Lebanon, where Israel is conducting heavy attacks.

On Monday, Trump dismissed Iran’s demands as "trash."
