Russia Launches Heavy Missile and Drone Attacks on Kyiv, Killing 1 and Injuring at Least 31

The Russian military launched a major air assault using missiles and drones on Kyiv and its surrounding areas just days after a ceasefire ended, causing several residential buildings to collapse, resulting in one death and at least 31 injuries.

In the early hours of 14 May, Kyiv faced heavy air strikes with guided missiles and killer drones. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the capital was under intense enemy attack, causing loud explosions throughout the city and forcing the air defense system into overdrive.

Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, confirmed one fatality, while the State Emergency Service reported 31 injured, including one child. Damage was spread across six districts within the capital and six surrounding areas.

The hardest-hit area was Darnytsia district, where multiple multi-story residential buildings were attacked and partially collapsed, splitting into two sections. Residents were trapped under debris; rescue teams have saved at least 10 people and continue searching amid smoke and rubble for others who may remain trapped.

Additionally, in the Dnipro district, a drone crashed into the roof of a five-story residential building, and missile fragments fell on non-residential buildings and a parking lot, causing fires that destroyed several cars.

This major attack came just two days after Russia ended a three-day ceasefire, which had been declared following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a Victory Day parade at Red Square.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the previous Wednesday, Russia used over 800 drones to attack western parts of Ukraine, killing six people. He said Russia’s goal is to inflict maximum pain and sorrow, and called on President Trump to raise the issue of ending the war during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The Russia-Ukraine war has now lasted over four years, and this latest wave of attacks shows the conflict remains intense with no immediate prospects for peace talks.
