Tragic Incident: 38-Year-Old Australian Man Attacked by 4-Meter Great White Shark, CPR Efforts Fail

A shocking incident took place in Western Australian waters after a 38-year-old man was attacked by a roughly 4-meter-long great white shark near a popular tourist island’s coral reef. Rescue teams rushed to perform CPR but could not save his life.

The tragic event occurred in Western Australian waters at Horseshoe Reef near the well-known tourist destination Rottnest Island, close to Perth, just before 10:00 a.m. last Saturday. The victim was bitten by the shark while in the sea northwest of the island.

Local Australian media reported aerial photos showing the moment officials and witnesses urgently lifted the man onto a boat to return to shore. He was taken to George Bay pier, where paramedics and police performed CPR, but they were unable to save him.

The Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed the fatal shark attack and issued warnings urging the public to exercise extra caution when swimming or engaging in marine activities in the area.

This incident marks the first fatal shark attack in Western Australia since March last year, when a surfer was fatally attacked by a shark at a remote beach.

Australia is one of the countries with the highest frequency of shark attacks worldwide. Records since 1791 show nearly 1,300 shark attacks on humans, with over 260 resulting in fatalities.

Earlier in 2026, New South Wales' coastline saw four shark attacks within just two days. One victim was 12-year-old Nico Antich, who jumped from rocks in Sydney Harbour and was attacked by a bull shark, passing away a week later amid his family’s grief.
