Qantas Airlines has imposed a lifetime ban on a male passenger after he went berserk, verbally abused, and "bit" a flight attendant during a flight from Melbourne to the United States, forcing the captain to make an emergency landing midway at Tahiti island.
A dramatic incident occurred on Qantas flight QF21, departing from Melbourne, Australia, bound for Dallas, United States, last Friday (15 May). The aircraft had to divert and make an emergency landing in Papeete, Tahiti, due to a passenger causing a severe disturbance onboard.
According to a report from ABC News, the male passenger bit a flight attendant, prompting crew and other passengers to restrain and tie him to his seat. However, the airline and local authorities have yet to officially confirm the biting incident but have confirmed that violence did occur. Upon landing on the runway in Tahiti, local police boarded the plane and immediately arrested the passenger.
Parts of the incident were recorded by Mike Goldstein, a well-known comedian who happened to be on the flight heading to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. He shared the video clip on his personal Instagram account.
The clip shows the male passenger staggering out of the restroom, speaking incoherently, and starting to verbally abuse the flight attendants and other passengers with foul language. One flight attendant warned him, "There are children all around you, but you’re behaving immaturely. You need to behave properly; you’re on a plane now."
However, the man appeared confused and asked the flight attendant if there was "marijuana" to smoke, adding, "I'm just about to step out for a cigarette." The video also shows the passenger becoming increasingly aggressive when ordered to move to the rear of the plane. This aligns with reports on the X platform from the Air Nav Radar account, which stated that the man assaulted crew members by biting them.
A Qantas spokesperson issued a statement regarding the incident: "The safety of our customers and crew is our top priority, and we will not tolerate or excuse any disruptive or threatening behavior on our flights under any circumstances."
Following the incident, Qantas announced a strict penalty by imposing a lifetime ban on the male passenger from flying on any Qantas Group flights, which also includes the Jetstar airline subsidiary.
After the offender was handed over to Tahitian police as per legal procedures, the aircraft was refueled and continued its journey immediately. All remaining passengers arrived safely at their destination in Dallas on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the media has reached out to the Australian Federal Police for comments and updates on legal proceedings.
