Ukraine Launches Largest Drone Attack on Moscow in a Year, Killing at Least 3

Ukraine launched hundreds of drones in a major attack on Russian territory, including Moscow, resulting in at least three deaths and dozens injured, while Ukraine also continues to face ongoing attacks.

Foreign news agencies reported on 17 May 2026 that Ukraine sent hundreds of drones to attack Moscow Oblast, the region containing Russia's capital, overnight, causing three deaths and multiple injuries. This marks Ukraine's largest attack in over a year.

Andrey Vorobyov, governor of Moscow Oblast, stated that one woman died in Khimki, north of Moscow, and another person remains trapped under debris. Additionally, a man and a woman died in the village of Pogorelki.

Sergei Sobyanin, mayor of Moscow, revealed that 12 people were injured after drones struck near the city's oil refinery entrance, damaging three nearby houses.

The Russian military announced it intercepted a total of 556 drones across the country, with about 130 intercepted in Moscow Oblast. One drone crashed at Sheremetyevo Airport, Russia's busiest airport, but no injuries occurred and operations continued as usual.

The Indian Embassy in Moscow reported that one Indian man died and three others were injured, though it remains unclear if these figures are included in Governor Vorobyov's death toll. Additionally, one person died in Belgorod Oblast, bordering Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated the attack was a “highly justified” response to Russia’s bloody assaults on various Ukrainian cities.

Earlier this week, Russia launched a major drone and missile attack that killed 24 people in Kyiv.

On the Ukrainian side, officials reported eight injuries from Russian drone strikes and artillery fire overnight in the central Dnipropetrovsk region.
