A Japanese energy company is preparing to halt a reactor at a nuclear power plant in Miyagi Prefecture after detecting radioactive-contaminated steam inside the plant's turbine building.
On 17 May 2026 GMT+7, Tohoku Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, announced they plan to suspend operations of a reactor at the Onagawa Nuclear Power Station in Miyagi Prefecture after detecting radioactive-contaminated steam inside the turbine building.
According to TEPCO's report, there has been no leakage of radioactive materials into the environment, and the suspension is solely for inspection purposes.
TEPCO also stated that a small amount of radioactive-contaminated steam was detected inside the turbine building of Reactor Unit 2 at around 17:10, and denied any connection between this nuclear plant incident and the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that shook the northeastern region the previous Friday night.
Previously, operations of this reactor had been suspended for routine inspections and had just resumed on Monday, 11 May, with plans to restart commercial operations on 9 June.
