Myanmar Shaken by 5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Near Yangon Tremors Felt in Several Areas of Thailand

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on the morning of Monday, 18 May 2026. The epicenter was located near Joktan city, close to Yangon, and the tremors were felt in several areas, including parts of Thailand.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake occurred at 08:05 local time at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers, classifying it as a moderately shallow quake.

However, geological agencies noted that information on the earthquake’s magnitude, depth, and epicenter location may be revised in the coming hours as scientists conduct more detailed analyses.

Subsequently, the French National Seismic Surveillance Network (Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique or RéNaSS) also confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude at 5.2.

Other agencies reported similar intensities: Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency estimated the magnitude at 5.4, while the RaspberryShake seismic network and Germany’s Geoscience Research Centre (GFZ) reported it at 5.2.

As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake.
