Tiger Escapes Cage and Is Shot Dead by German Police After Attacking Caretaker

A tiger escaped its cage in Germany and severely injured its caretaker before police tracked it down and shot it dead.

BBC News reported that the escaped tiger, believed to belong to the woman nicknamed the “Tiger Queen” of Germany, was shot dead by police after it attacked one of its caretakers.

Police told the BBC that a 72-year-old man was seriously injured after being mauled on Sunday while inside the tiger’s cage at a private animal facility in a suburb of Leipzig, Germany.

The tiger then escaped from its enclosure, but heavily armed police tracked it down shortly afterward and decided to shoot the animal dead.

Local media reported that the tiger cage is believed to be owned by Carmen Sander, a controversial animal trainer and private animal owner who calls herself the “Tiger Queen of Germany.” This tiger was one of eight tigers and lions kept in an industrial area near the town of Schkeuditz.

Police stated that local officers were alerted to the emergency around 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday and responded quickly. They said they had to shoot the male tiger to eliminate any potential risk to the public. The local police station also added that

a police spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing into how the tiger managed to escape from the cage.

No other animals escaped from the facility, and police plan to use drones to conduct aerial searches to ensure maximum safety.

Mayor Thomas Druskat called for the relocation of the other animals and told local media, “I don’t want to imagine what could have happened if more people had been injured.”

According to a website using Sander’s name and nickname, the trainer organizes events where the public pays to interact closely with the tigers, claiming it is an “unforgettable” experience “you won’t find anywhere else.”
