Trump Insists War with Iran Is Necessary, Regardless of Popularity

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that war with Iran is necessary to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, regardless of whether this is popular among Americans.

On 19 May 2026 GMT+7, President Donald Trump said he believes the U.S. war with Iran is popular among the public, and even if it is not, preventing Tehran from possessing nuclear weapons is a mission worth undertaking.

"Listen, everyone tells me this isn't popular, but I think it will become very popular when you—when they hear it's about nuclear weapons, weapons that can destroy Los Angeles or wipe out big cities in an instant," Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

"Whether it's popular or not, I have to do it because I won't allow this world to be blown to bits right before my eyes while I'm in office," Trump said. "It will never happen."

The U.S. president's remarks come as his approval ratings have sharply declined since the war began on 28 February, with only 36% of Americans supporting it.

On Monday, Donald Trump posted a message announcing he would "delay" the planned attack on Iran scheduled for Tuesday, citing requests from the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

However, on Tuesday, he said the postponement would only be "for a limited time," possibly until next week.
